Updates from March
Dozens of BUILD leaders traveled to Annapolis at least one time, and many traveled three or four times to show BUILD’s strong support for the passage of the Clean Slate and Fair Chance Housing bills. Leaders testified, spoke to legislators, and spent long hours at the House of Delegates and Senate. This support is paying off–both bills have passed the Senate! We’re currently working to get them passed in the House.
Turnaround Tuesday had two ribbon cuttings this month. They opened a new hub at Govans Boundary United Methodist Church where more than 100 leaders and public officials turned out in the rain to enjoy the celebration together. They also celebrated the grand re-opening of Zion Baptist Church where Turnaround Tuesday will now have their home base and hold two trainings every Tuesday.
85 people took part in the Chinquapin Trail design meeting hosted by Faith Presbyterian to learn some history of the trail, gets updates on the project, and provide feedback. Thanks to our partners at NECO, Rails to Trails, Faith, and Northside Baptist Church, we’re making great progress on this project.
BUILD leaders walked through Druid Heights with representatives from the Department of Public Works and the Housing Department, and Councilmember James Torrence concerning issues of trash and illegal dumping in the neighborhood. The community gained clarity on the process of getting more garbage cans and enduring trash pickup. This walk successfully helped community members feel seen and strengthened the partnership with local government.
