Through BUILD’s partner construction and development organization ReBUILD Metro, Inc., BUILD has revitalized neighborhoods and provided affordable housing across Baltimore City.
Investing in Housing
Whether it’s new construction or adaptive reuse, ReBuild Metro and BUILD strive to build high-quality, energy-efficient buildings that respect existing community character and provide a strong sustainable base for future growth.
To date, our affordable housing investments have resulted in over 180 occupied single-family homes and 129 multi-family units. We’ve also repurposed over 120 abandoned lots in East Baltimore. In each of the neighborhoods where these projects have taken place, income diversity increases, and because the work redevelops vacant property, there is no displacement.
Greenmount West, 2009
185 vacant properties
Greenmount West, 2017
75% reduction in abandoned properties
Oliver, 2009
458 vacant properties
Oliver, 2017
89% reduction in abandoned properties
Investing in Community
Path to Own
The Path to Own (PTO) program presents homeownership as an option for low- and moderate-income families in East Baltimore, in the community or even perhaps the home where they currently live. PTO engages neighborhood residents in short- and long-term paths toward financial stability. Residents participate in support groups that provide peer support as they journey through the stressful process of home-buying, with a focus on homeowner education and the mortgage process.
Local Commercial Development
Local businesses make neighborhoods more livable and more attractive. We revitalize neighborhoods and create jobs by making small business development and support accessible to local entrepreneurs—like the founders of CUPs Coffeehouse & Café, a non-profit that operates as a youth workforce development organization.
Parks & Open Spaces
ReBUILD Metro and BUILD have undertaken several park projects as part of current affordable housing development projects, because parks make communities healthy and connected. We’ve worked closely with the community in designing and fundraising for these parks. In June 2018, we celebrated the grand opening of Ambrose Kennedy Park in Johnston Square, an exciting project that heralds the start of our newest development plans in that neighborhood.
